WCM expects July decision on Woodhouse

West Cumbria Mining Ltd (WCM) said the final decision should be made by 7 July on its plans for a coking coal mine off the coast of Cumbria.

Application: West Cumbria Mining proposes to mine the coal for the steel making industry (WCMCGI)

HISTORY

In 2021, the Government called in the plans after previously twice refusing to do so.

Cumbria Council also refused to support the plans after previously granting approval, and the Committee for Climate Change also raised concerns.

Former Secretary of State for levelling up, housing and communities, Robert Jenrick authorised the Planning Inspectorate to conduct a public inquiry which ended in October 2021.

Inspector Stephen Normington this week sent his report and recommendation to Secretary of State Michael Gove to make the final decision.

The plans have drawn support from local residents, politicians and businesses as well as opposition from residents and national and international environmental campaigners.

WCM proposes to mine the coal, which would be processed at the former Marchon chemical works site in Whitehaven, for the steel making industry.
