UK Oil & Gas plc (UKOG) said that oil production would restart at the joint venture Avington field on PEDL070 in Hampshire, five years after being shut in.

Avington, which lies close to the Stockbridge oil field, received fresh planning approval in December 2021.
Operated by Star Energy, formally known as IGas, the field produced 0.276 million barrels of an estimated mid-case 59 million barrels of original oil in place (OIP), a recovery factor of only 0.47%, before the 2017 shut-in.
Partner Egdon Resources, due to be sold to its majority shareholder Petrichor Partners LP, last year increased its holding from 28% to 36.33%.

UKOG, with a 5% non-operated interest in Avington and the surrounding licence, added that the Avington joint operating committee had formally agreed to restart oil production.
“As the three closest similar producing fields to Avington exhibit oil recoveries of around 6-13% of the assessed OIP, potentially significant remaining recoverable oil resources lie within Avington for future exploitation.
“Avington operations will recommence via a workover of Avington-3z, the field’s best performing well, which came on stream in 2007 and accounts for around 81% of produced oil.”
Possible build-up of reservoir pressure around the well during the shut-in period could see an element of flush, or higher flow rate prior to shut-in, on the restart of production, added the company.
