The Dublin-based company, with diamond exploration assets in Finland, collected a series of stream sediment samples which have been sent to Canada for analysis.

A total of 14, nine and 10 samples were taken from licences KDR1-19, KDR2-22 in County Tyrone and KDR3-22 in mid-Ulster respectively.

“I am very pleased that the company’s exploration programme for nickel-copper-platinum group minerals over the three licences which we now hold in Northern Ireland is underway,” said chairman Professor Richard Conroy.

“Combined with the ongoing work in Finland, that is focused on the discovery of a major diamond deposit, this new opportunity adds to the overall potential of the company.”

In 2021 Karelian discovered indicator minerals suggestive of nickel, copper and platinum group metals while stream sampling for diamond on prospecting licence KDR1-19.

In October 2022, the company acquired two adjacent six-year prospecting licences KDR2-22 and KDR3-22 immediately north of KDR1-19, taking the total exploration area to 750 km2.
