Horizonte Resources plc continued with its environment and social (ES) responsibilities during 2020 at its 100% owned Araguaia ferronickel and Vermelho nickel-cobalt projects in Brazil.
ENVIRONMENT
In its financial report for 2020, Horizonte noted it published its first standalone sustainability report for activities during the financial year 2019.
The 44-page report covers transparency and accountability; labour rights and conditions; health, wellbeing and safety; accident and emergency response; biodiversity and baseline monitoring; climate change objectives; economic impact on communities; local procurement; community socio-economic initiatives; and resettlements.
“A report such as this is a huge undertaking, and therefore a rarity from junior preproduction companies,” said chairman David Hall.
“We believe this early commitment to sustainability reporting sets Horizonte apart and clearly demonstrates our pledge to the highest levels of sustainability performance.
“The report outlines our objectives in the areas of environmental stewardship, social development and corporate governance, as well as highlighting the significant work we have undertaken to date.
“We committed to publishing a Sustainability Report alongside our Annual Report on an annual basis.
“This increased reporting schedule encapsulates our core values of transparency and accountability, sustainability and innovation.”
SOCIAL
Horizonte said it had supported local communities throughout the pandemic.
The junior miner provided and distributed hundreds of food packages, in partnership with the welfare departments of each municipality, to the most vulnerable families and the work continues into this year.
Horizonte normally participates in many social engagements and initiatives and, where possible, the company’s social team continued to engage with and listen to local communities.
