Helium confirmed from downhole fluid samples in Tai-3

Helium One Global Ltd said that downhole fluid samples have confirmed the presence of helium in the Tai-3 well on the Rukwa licence, Tanzania.

Fluids were recovered from reservoir intervals in the Upper and Lower Karoo Group following the now completed wireline logging and sampling, which showed “good quality reservoir sands interbedded with well developed shale prone seals”.

Data also demonstrated a stratigraphic section previously undrilled in the Rukwa Rift basin.

On-site analysis of the samples yielded helium concentrations up to 8,320 parts per million ppm helium, which measure “significantly above normal background levels of approximately 5ppm”>

No Basement samples were obtained the wireline tools were unable to run past 1,430m measured depth (MD) due to washouts and ledges.

Tai-3 well has been suspended for future operations involving drilling deeper into the Basement target.

The company’s Epiroc Predator 220 drilling rig will move to the new Itumbula well location where the iron roughneck and hydraulics will be repaired before the drilling campaign continues.

Chief executive Lorna Blaisse said that the company was confident of returning to Tai-3 at a later date and target the “significant potential” of the fractured Basement helium play.

“We have continued to demonstrate that there is an established working helium system in the Rukwa basin and the Tai-3 well has given us a fundamental set of geological learnings, which we now intend to apply to the Itumbula prospect.”
