BGS submits report on shale gas extraction to Government

The British Geological Survey (BGS) said it had submitted its report to the Government on the latest scientific evidence around shale gas extraction.

CONSIDERATION

On 5 April 2022, Secretary of State Kwasi Kwarteng at the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy Strategy (BEIS) commissioned a review on the any recent developments on shale gas extraction.

“Following independent external peer review, a report has been submitted today, 5 July 2022, to the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy for consideration,” said the BGS in a statement today.

MORATORIUM

In November 2019, the Government imposed a moratorium on hydraulic fracturing – known commonly as fracking – to extract shale gas.

This followed reported earthquakes at Cuadrilla Resources Ltd’s shale gas project in Lancashire.
